we were assigned to compare the effectiveness of various search engines this week and this is what i found! hees!

METACRAWLER



MetaCrawler is a metasearch engine that blends the top web search results from Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Ask.com, About.com,  MIVA,  LookSmart and other popular search engines. MetaCrawler also provides users the option to search for images, video, news, yellow pages and white pages. It is used to provide the option to search for audio.

Metacrawler has a very small range of search result. (Proximal 3 pages)

However, the search results are obtained from links of other search engines like Google, Bing, etc.

Next i would like to talk on subject directories:

i have choosen galaxy for example.

GALAXY

Subject Directories like Galaxy consist of large catalogs or indexes of web sites covering a multitude of subjects that have been reviewed, gathered together and organized by human editors. Directories are organized hierarchically into many different subjects or categories. It is easy for a user to browse through the lists of web sites found under each subject or category.

The results are obtained from different organisation pages. (Research centre, museum)Results are relevant as mostly are from research centre and unis.They provide relevant calculations and scientific info on the topic.Galaxy has a wide range of search results.Galaxy allow us to search website from certain country but the results will only show us stories, politics, sports, entertainment and etc.

This is what i found out during this lesson i would try to use these two website next time when im conducting a search! Thanks to this CDS if not i wouldnt know that these two website exist! ;)

 

My second life e-learning

Is time for me to post my blog again!

Today i shall post about my second life virture shopping.

During our last lesson, teacher gave us a list of shopping places and asked us to explore and compare. So i pick Mia as my shopping destination.

Before that i thought i would have to purchase linden dollars for this virture shopping so i went to check it out on the website.

I was stunned because i have to pay for it using my master card..So i send an email to my teacher as seek for help!

Luckily teacher explained to me what i should do for this e-learning week. If not i think i would have have things to blog for this week and i have already spent my money on the linden dollars! phew...

next, my computer lags, is so hard for me to play SL because my avatar is not moving..

But after awhile you will see her flying or walking non stop and i hate it.

The thing i like best about this virtual experience which i cant get i real life is that i can anyhow talk to the person beside me and make friends with them.

I bet if you do it in your real life, people will say you crazy and ignore you.

During the shopping period, i have know a lot of friend and this girl im talking to eventually came from UK. Gosh, i have a overseas friend online! haha

Other than that, second life provide us teleport and flying features.

this save us a lot of time because we no need to walk there! In real life im that lazy too although im a volleyball player. hahas

i went into a shop named Gigi.

i was with my friend online actually. we planned to do together so that we can help out each other.

i walk around and i thought i can try on the clothes or shoes, but when i click on the picture, it pop out a window and ask me to purchase it.

I'm broke, so i couldn't afford anything in second life. hahas

i click on every picture and i came across this,

a free socking!

so i grab it without paying it!

then i went out of Gigi and i went to other shop.

this shop looks so unique from the outside so i decided to walk in.

i love to enter those funny funny shop actually. i want to know what's inside or what they selling.

As compare to E shopping online, i think i will love second life shopping spee more because i need not worried that i will get cheated by the seller or maybe delay in receiving my stuffs.

In second life, i need not worried how much i would spent because it is virture and it wont affect much on me. But if you do online shopping, you will start to worried after you pay: does the clothes fit well? when am i going to receive my clothes? will it have flaws on my stuffs?

thousands thousands of question will appear in your brain and you will feel so stress because you had already pay your order.

other than that, second life have a lot of products and ranging from different style, colours, length and cost.

i found this model wearing this tube dress and i eventually have one that look almost the same! haha

At the end of the day, i have learnt that other than those social website we can still make friends through game like this.

It is also a place for shy people like me take the first step out to get to know other people. This is because no one know your true identity and you can say whatever you want.

And in SL, you can dress whatever your want because no one would care bout your looks.

But we cant live in SL forever, we need to face reality, but i was a good place thou for us to dream.

Search Search Search

My lessons ended early today, and so I was early for my class! When the teacher arrived, she immediately told us what to do for today and also for the next week because our next tutorial happens to fall on Hari Raya, so we have no physical class for next week!

After which, my teacher showed us practical 3 and ask us to do a research on the search engine- Google.com and Google scholar.com.

I started with Google's search functions because I have always been using it whenever I need to do my project or have any doubts in my studies. Thus, I think that it will be easier for me to gather information because I’m more familiar with it.

For google.com, I think that it has much more features as compared to Google scholar. It allows us to search for videos and images, whereas we can’t do so on google scholar.com. Other than that, whenever we need to search information on a particular topic, what we need to do is just to type in the keyword or the synonyms of it which is related to the topic. Millions of URL links would then appear on the monitor. From the headings of the URL, I can easily pick the website I want visit and to obtain the information I needed. Besides this, if we have any spelling mistakes on our keyword search, google.com has the automatic correction or suggestion keyword to help rectify the mistake.

As for google scholar, it is my first time I have heard of it. I was wondering what website exactly is it? Why would the teacher give us such a weird website name that I have never come across before? Alright, after I typed in the URL, it really appeared! I realise it is actually a website for us to search on books, magazines or journals together with the author's name and when is the book published.

For me I preferred google.com because I think that google.com showed us more information which is straight to the point whereas google scholar.com showed us only books. Moreover, I think that some books are not up to date because it will take quite a long time for the authors to upload it.

At the end of the lesson, I also learnt that citation is also very important. It is consider as plagiarism if a report is not cited. Thus, it is very important to always acknowledge people's work when you adopt their words or ideas from them. Bibliography are also needed because we have to give readers the opportunity to identify the accuracy of the information shown in the passage. And it also offers additional information to readers who may wish to further pursue the topic.

The second part of the portfolio is to ask us to use our imaginary $500 dollars and do online shopping. Actually I'm a shopaholic but I'm kind of lazy to go out because need to dress up nicely and is so troublesome!  So i love online shopping!

The first website i would go is http://www.forever21.com/.

It is a website that sells the clothes from forever 21 shop. Although we have the outlets in singapore but some of the clothes are not sold in here. So online shopping will be the better choice to get something different.

this is the first dress i would buy because it nice and sweet.

the price stated in the website is in USD so we need to convert the currency to SGD so that we will roughly know the price of the item we want.

i would like to buy these to because is like kind of stylist and is simple.

my total spent at this website cost around $240 SGD and it includes the shipping fare which is 50 bucks.

The reason i pick this website because it is a official website for the forever 21 shop and the company have to maintain their well built reputation.

The next website i go is http://www.ebay.com.sg/

It is a place where people can put anything they want to sell but it has a time limit. When the period of time is expired, the seller will have to registered the product again.

At this website, buyer can compare the product's price or place a bid in order to get the thing they want.

So today i would like to get one of this because i love hello kitty a lot and this camera catches the wonderful moment when I'm spending my time with my family or friends.

this camera cost about $205.85 SGD and this includes a fujifilm instax mini 25 and 5 boxes of film.

this new model contains a strap, a close up lens ans 2 CR2 batteries.

Each box contains 10 films and total up i would have 50 films. So i think the price is quite reasonable.

there are so many seller in this website but i choose this seller because i read the feedback from the buyer and this seller has 100% positive feedback. So i think i would be safe for me to purchase this camera from him

So this end my 'shopping trip' online today! And the next time of my online shopping will be the day i got my pay!



Is my nervous day

I’m really nervous! It’s my first lesson for this subject while it’s already the second lesson for the other classmates. I’m kind of lost because I don’t really know what to expect from this lesson. But I guess I will just try my best to do well in this cds.I want to maintain my GPA!

So after reading the overview and portfolio given to me, I felt so stress. There is so much to do and I’m afraid that I might miss out some of them. I seriously hope that the teacher can really guide me during the class and aid me in this subject. I think I need to seek help for the next lesson already.

Alright, for the time being I would just like to summarise what I have absorb during the class. Today, the teacher asked us to pick the topic for our portfolio, and she needed two students to choose the first topic. Just my luck that two people volunteered and everybody gets to have their topic in mind!

I have chosen topic 3 which is, 'Discuss the developments on renewal energy sources in the world'. I choose this topic as I’m a science student and I’m more interested in nature and Sci-Fi rather than those electronic stuffs. Also, when I’m doing on this topic, I would get to know more information on the internet which the textbook does not provide. After we picked the topic, we were asked to do some research in the lab. But since I haven uploaded my first blog post yet, I got to do it in the lab and to leave my researching work after class. The objectives of the practical lesson are to identify the categories of Internet resources, as compared the different categories and purposes of Internet resources. After which we have to blog about the reflections on the lessons learnt from the practical.
According to the list online there are 4 categories which is organisational websites, blogs, magazine and discussion forum.
From the research, I found out that due to the fact that the organisations has to maintain their well built reputation, they have to provide relatively accurate and reliable information and the information they provides often comes with pictures and statistic facts. Sometimes they also provide extra information such as links to other websites.
We all know that a blog is very personal. It is a way to let the authors to express their feeling or to present their work. The author may put in different opinion and it may be inaccurate because we know that different person have different point of views.
As for the magazine, they provide a large range of information and it is like a compressed dictionary. It contains a lot of information and is very detailed. It also often comes with pictures and explanations. So, if I were to do a research, I will first go for the magazine because I will get the most information from there.
Lastly, the discussion forum. A discussion forum is a forum whereby members can discuss and give opinion about different issues. However, their replies will be permanent and members cannot make changes to it. This forum is good to a certain extend for it might not be accurate as different people have different viewpoints. Not only so, sometimes tension between members can occur during discussions.

That’s all I’ve learnt from my lesson. Guess it was pretty interesting, isn’t it!

My first EIR class

 Hello everyone!

This is my first post for my third CDS which is EIR.

It's been a hard time for me to get this subject because i was not enrolled to this subject at first and when i wanted to make changes to it, my CP told me that IT WAS FULL!

OMG i told myself and i was feeling down for a couples of days and i prayed so hard and in the end i got it! i have to thank god for helping me!

Alright, i think i would stop all my craps and have a short introduction of myself.

My name is Wong Jing Xian, most the people call me Jamie because they think is hard for them to remember my Chinese name which is so hard to pronounce. I wonder why my parents gave me such a unique name, but i love my name so much because is given by my parents!

I'm currently a year 2.2 student who enrolled in Biomedical Informatics and Engineering which is in Engine School.

I have to learn a lot of things and engineering based subjects is killing me! 

During my free time, i love to stay at home and do lots of handcraft,knitting,sewing and house cleaning. I know for certain people they will think that only old ladies do that, but i strongly disagree because I'm only 19 years old and i seriously don't look old!

Although people call me old lady, but i'm still a teenager! I love to listen to musics and watch my favourite tv programmes! I don't have any favourite singer because i only search for songs that catches my ears.I love CSI the most because i love to see the investigator gather the evidence and sent the criminals to jail.  

'GIRLS LOVE SHOPPING'

i think every girl will tell you that. This includes me as well. I love to go shopping with my fellow friends and we will go to have a "tai tai" tea break after the whole day of walking. Although is tiring but we will not stop until the night falls.

During my so called Internet sections, i will click on the facebook and start to stalk my friend, see their pictures and start to comment on their status or leave a short message on their page.

Other than that, i like to visit Youtube because it is a place that i can watch lots of video and tv shows such as America next top model. I wonder why i love ANTM so much.:)

i would answer:"of course!I'm a volleyball lover"

So i think you all would know what my hobby is by now?

Although this sport always injured me(in fact i injured myself) but i will not stop my passion for it!

How to become a volleyballer? i think we need to have stamina because it is a hectic game.So you will need to jog very often to built up your stamina and of course plenty of training is needed because practice makes perfect!
